“Free”lancing

Wednesday, April 16th, 2008

My latest project, the Dallas Chapter of the SFA Alumni Association.  This was actually a complete redesign.  The original site included a social network that just wasn’t really working.  The organization hopes to increase donations for scholarships and general operations through a business directory.  I’m still working up ideas for that, but the basic structure of the site is done — it’s very lean and utilizes CSS for the styling.  The Content Manager is actually Wordpress 2.5 (I started out building my own extremely lite CMS with PHP and TinyMCE but thought, “Why reinvent the wheel?”).  I took the site design I had made and modified it into a Wordpress template.

I did this one for free, but I’m hoping to generate some business from it.

Skype?

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

I just discovered the awesomeness of Skype and then realized that I don’t have anyone to talk to…

In slightly geekier news, I found a wonderful program that lets me use Windows Remote Desktop from my Mac — I also found one that turns my laptop into a light sabre… one of those products is more productive than the other, but I’ll let you decide ;-)

Be A Bearcat!

Thursday, February 14th, 2008

My latest project is done. My client was Lon Morris College and the project was to create a site for the admissions office. My goal was to implement a content management system to separate design and development from content. I chose Adobe Contribute to handle the content management for two reasons: It’s simple and it works hand in hand with Dreamweaver. I trained the staff on Monday on Contribute and they’ve already populated the site with content! I guess it was an effective training session (or the product is just that easy to use). Check it out at http://www.beabearcat.com.

Are YOU sharing an IP address?

Tuesday, July 3rd, 2007

If you’re not into geeky web stuff just skip this one.

If you host your own site check out http://www.domaintools.com/reverse-ip/ to see who you may be sharing an IP address with.  I was very pleased to see that Site5 doesn’t share IP Addresses.  What’s the difference?  Sharing an IP address is kinda like sharing a bathroom with complete strangers - hundreds and hundreds of strangers…  eww.

On another note, I think I’m going to start offering web hosting at reasonable prices; and you’ll get your own IP address ;-)
